Reviewing the first trip through the New York Mets rotation:

Bartolo Colon (1-0) 6 innings, 1 ER, 3 H, 8 K, 1 BB, .67 WHIP, 1.50 ERA

Jacob deGrom (0-1) 6 innings, 2 ER, 6 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 1.33 WHIP, 3.00 ERA

Matt Harvey (1-0) 6 innings, 0 ER, 4 H, 9 K, 1 BB,.83 WHIP, 0.00 ERA

Jonathan Niese (0-0) 5 innings, 1 ER, 7 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 1.80 WHIP, 1.80 ERA

Dillon Gee (0-1) 5 innings, 5 ER, 8 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.60 WHIP, 9.00 ERA

Best Start – The easy pick would be Harvey’s return, but the correct answer is Bartolo Colon on Opening Day.

Going into rival territory against the prohibitive World Series favorite, Colon allowed just three hits and never allowed the gNats to get comfortable; the lone blemish was a solo shot to Bryce Harper.

But what’s more memorable was after they took advantage of an error to take a 2-1 lead, Colon got the first two outs. Then Harper singled and Ryan Zimmerman walked. The tying run was a soft single away, but Colon got his eight and final strikeout to end the threat.

Worst Start – Once again, the easy pick is Dillon Gee getting roughed up in Atlanta, but the correct answer is Jonathan Niese on Friday night.

Yes, Wilmer Flores made two errors that led to runs scoring. But that has nothing to do with giving up a lead off home run to Cameron Maybin…

OK, I’m nit-picking because unlike others, I’m not ready to get rid of the infielder prospect after a slow start to the season. But a veteran pitcher like Niese needed to pick up his young teammate. More importantly, he needed to pick up his bullpen.

The best thing a starting pitcher can do during the early season is provide innings. With the obvious reliance on relief a standard in today’s game, I expect at least six innings from my starter. Niese went five.

He wasn’t getting hit really hard and the mistakes behind him clearly cost him pitches, but high pitch counts has always been a problem with our lone lefty starter.

And yes, I know that if Flores makes one of the three plays he had toruble with Niese likely pitches into the sixth inning. But once again, I’m not going to hurt the already fragile psyche of the young shortstop.

Looking Forward – deGrom and Harvey open up the home schedule against the Phillies. Gee gets the first crack at the Miami Marlins on Friday against Jarred Cosart (0-2), who’s only allowed two earned runs in 12 innings.
