Deadline

I still listen to a calling to cover high school football games in the fall. I’ve long said that the small community newspaper will never die and so long as there’s football, there are people that can be advertised to when they read about a game they might have attended.

It’s VIP parking, a seat in the press box and a complimentary meal. After the game, you’re on the field to speak with the coach, maybe a player and back to the car.

But here’s where it becomes a job. You have to write 350-400 words about what you just saw in under 30 minutes…because you have a deadline.

It’s a reporter term for when the story needed to be in. Back before, it had to be in before the tablet went to press…which was an actual press. When I worked in Greenville, the press was right next to the newsroom and you could see in.

Deadlines in the digital age are still the same in the newspaper business. While the medium is considered ‘dead’, there are still newspapers being printed. Not nearly as many as before and with slimmer pages to cut costs, but it’s enough of a staple that it will remain.

I remain committed to post daily and let this be fair warning, I will be posting about the upcoming baseball season. My mornings have been spent on MLB Trade Rumors to see what’s next in the offseason for my team.

And for all the hell Sandy Alderson gets from the fan base, they’ve done what they wanted to do at the price they wanted to pay. The problem with the remaining unsigned free agents is they’ve overvalued themselves.

The argument is for the past few years, there have been gradual increases in player’s salaries during the winter. It’s usually a big name that sets the curve and the players get a big check…

There’s more to this. More than I’m willing to say more about before doing some research…
