Pasttime – 40

I see them wearing their wealth everyday, but I don’t know what to say.

From signing bonus babies fresh from their minor league assignment and now with the Big Club to those in the stands, in the bars, on the streets and in the airports as I move around.

They are everywhere, wearing things just to be able to say,

”You ain’t got this!”

While it affects people of all ages, it’s easiest to see with the next generation only because the older one either has the excuse of ‘earning it’ or the stupidity of not realizing the truth.

A truth that was almost purposely untold as we were grown. I remember, he said as he climbed onto his soapbox to discuss ‘my day’, that middle school students took home economics or industrials arts.

You learned the basics of a kitchen so you wouldn’t have to depend upon processed and fast foods. A time before mine taught students about creating a home budget, the first introduction to fiscal responsibility and financial literacy.

And while many in Shop class wouldn’t become carpenters, they did have to build something with thier hands and problem solve to do it.

And while it’s noble to believe that this necessary knowledge for adults should come from the parents, there are too many children raised by something else. Whether that’s the streets or the television they’re dropped in front of, even the upper class kids are routinely ignored  out of lack of time due to the work commitments to create the lifestyle.

Or the overall results of said lifestyle.

So as I look at the style of life being led by those around me, how do I question it and who am I to judge their actions?
