Pasttime – 48

If you loved your childhood and the parents that provided it, you’ve got no issue helping out however you can.

I was lucky enough that my mother didn’t need my support. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t ask for money every now and again.

Pulling into a grocery store parking lot is always fun, he said sarcastically.

Especially when there’s two different cars with random people living their best life.

I wasn’t aware that Western Union had gone completely digital as I looked around for the usual forms in triplicate.

When I asked, the register jockey said,

“Yeah, they made it digital for you people. But you can just give your info at the register.”

And while I waited in line, I questioned her choice of words. Her choice of terminology would seem strange or backward, but it depends on your definition of ‘you people’.

It could be the many people of color, of minority status, of a need to send money to pay a bill with cash, to send money across the country, to send money back home.

It’s easy to think about money n this First World paradise, where even a lowly register jockey at a grocery store can believe herself better than others just attempting to move money around.

My mind trailed in that direction before I stared right at the obvious. “You people” was actually a compliment.

You people with money to send to pay a bill. With money to send to those in need. With money to move about via the last truly last and legal way to move cash.

It was untraceable before but now they want your government documents to make moves.

But those are problems for those with money. “You people” with money have to deal with that.

Or at least that’s what I convinced myself was the case.
