I’m thinking about laying off my slider for a few weeks. It’s not a big deal, but it could create something special.
It’s not my best pitch. In fact, while I’ve had some success with it; I don’t truly believe it in and I think that can affect its performance.
It’s not as if I’ve been beaten badly using it. It’s just not anything that’s a guaranteed success, therefore I don’t trust it. But because I don’t trust it, I don’t use it. And since I don’t use it, it’s not a guaranteed success.
A cycle that’s silly, especially since it’s not a great pitch.
I need to work on it. I need to get it some reps in real time. There’s only so much you can learn in a bullpen session and during the regular season, the only batters we face wear a different jersey.
OK, there are obvious exceptions to that rule. But most of those exceptions are saved for starters, not relievers with only a few years in the Bigs.
But if I sit it down. If I put it aside and concentrate on the drop of my change up, while I’ll essentially become a two-pitch pitcher, I’ll be one with two really tough pitches.
I’m having this discussion in my head. Probably should talk with my catcher about this…
