Since the start of the game, meaning the foundations of rounders and cricket and whatever other folk games and provincial ideas that formed into what was once America’s past time…
Well, since the start there’s been an ongoing debate about the best way to get people out.
With all the advanced analytics and charts and graphs and video and everything else, it still comes down to two schools: Pitchers and Hurlers.
Hurlers, of which I am not one, take advantage of their God-given abilities to the best of those abilities. Because no matter how many arm bars you do, no matter the weight on your triceps curls, a man can only throw a ball so hard.
But that’s not to say that each man is the same.
I max out at 93 miles per hour. That’s fast, but not really. And there’s nothing I can do about it. For me to throw 94, it would require maximum effort and some wind-assistance.
Juan doesn’t have that issue. He tops out at 101, but rarely attempts it since he loses all aspects of control. But he easily gets the ball to 95 without strain or stress. That he doesn’t have full control of his heat is part of the allure with a hurler. You never know exactly what you’re going to get with each pitch and that keeps the hitter on edge.
But it doesn’t always equate to outs.
