There are comparable situations to the relationship between pitcher and catcher, but the only physical parallel is the quarterback and center.
But in that scenario, it’s clear who’s in charge – the coach from the sidelines calling the plays.
There is no freedom in football. It is a dominating, subservient sport that relies on loyal subjects following stringent rules for the betterment of the entire team. The best football teams work as one and follow instructions without question.
While the best baseball teams work together in the field, there’s too much individualism needed between the lines. The fielder is by himself, ready to react and interact with his teammates if necessary. But he is not dependent upon them. He is free to make what he determines as the best decision in the moment, unbeholden to those around him.
That same sentiment is what every pitcher longs for. We are raised following the orders of others. Our arms are our own, but they serve someone else for years and it’s only with time and luck and persistence that we gain our independence.
