Pasttime – 116

If a repuatation is built upon what is remembered and the culture demands its news as its happening and immediately afterwards, one can be made on anything and nothing at all.

It’s easy to take the truth of that statement and apply it to thousands of instances, but when it comes to the arm strength of outfielders, it boils down to what’s been seen and what’s been reported.

And thanks to the speed of social media and its endless appetite for something new that didn’t just happen (unless you’re into that kind of thing), we get highlights cut to showcase and show off us at our best.

Or our absolute worst.

But rarely does it show off the middle. Rarely do you get a gif of an outfielder tracking a fly ball and properly playing the angles to prevent it from landing into the safety of the grass.

And if you only see them tracking a ball when they’re forced to dive or jump, you certainly don’t see how they respond to doubles down the line into the corner or a laser beam to the apexs off center field.

Unless they unleash an amazing throw that gets a runner out.

And when that happens, they’re lauded and praised. They’re cheered and replayed and turned into gifs and some even recieve a golden glove at the end of the year.

But can they perform like that every time?
