“Your dad’s black Honda was a Maybach.”

‘First time’

Kygo & Ellie Goulding

Does the excitement of being able to drive, being able to go where ever you want; does that still exist today?

I can only speak of what I know and where I grew up. So I was able to take it vantage of public transportation. But I was also in an area where public transportation were my own 2 feet.

I walked to numerous places that I would normally have driven, well would have asked for a ride but didn’t have that as an option.

So in a world with rideshare capabilities just as close as your phone, does that take away from the freedom?

I was antsy. Well, more like adventurous. That sounds way better than agitated and irritable and ready to move, although that’s probably a better description of how I was.

I left my home repeatedly and add any and all times to go any where… Except for there.

Since that was the only criteria, I was willing to walk a mile to a friends house. I was willing to go to the park and see if anybody was there. I was willing to find any excuse to not be home.

That’s a feeling I had from middle school and only grew stronger in high school, therefore when me and all of my elk turned to the age of driving permit and the like, I was willing to get in anybody’s car.

It didn’t matter who’s car, so long as the destinations was not my house and I knew how I was getting back.

By the time senior year rolled around, people had their cars. Sometimes it was their car, like their car. Meaning they had it all the time which was a complete revelation.

But there were Many of us that were dependent upon using the vehicle that their parents drove.

That meant the rare times that I did drive, it was in the late 80s Ford Thunderbird.

But that didn’t hold a candle to the countless times I rode shotgun in a little blue Honda Civic Coupe. Or got picked up in a brown Dodge Spirit.

Those rides, those moments may be forgotten in terms of details; but the exuberance, the excitement, The energy generated from that freedom is something that has remained.

All I wonder is while I know next generation will have something similar, I’m curious if it will involve a car.
