Hello, Hi and welcome again to Mets Up, a recap of the latest New York Mets starting rotation cycle.
Let’s get into the numbers…
| VS | IP | H | R | ER | BB | K | ERA | |
| David Peterson (0-1) | SF / L | 4.1 | 9 | 6 | 5 | 2 | 5 | 4.66 |
| Nolan McLean (1-0) | SF/ W | 5.1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 4 | 2.61 |
| Clay Holmes (2-0) | SF / W | 7 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 4 | 1.42 |
| Kodai Senga (0-1) | SF / ND | 5.2 | 5 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 7 | 3.09 |
Starters record – 2-1
Innings pitched – 22.1 of 36 (62%)
Quality starts – 1
Overall Staff ERA – 2.53
Best start – Clay Holmes is the easy choice, lowering his ERA to 1.42 with a start I didn’t see thanks to the 10 pm EST start time.
Worst start – David Peterson was the best last week; is the worst this week. His error on an easy toss allowed another run. An infield hit and two sacrifice flies plated two more and reaching the fifth inning became a success after allowing so much.
So much so, that I soon went to sleep and didn’t tune into live action until Sunday afternoon.
From The Athletic’s Tim Britton:
“Through 10 games, the Mets have allowed 32 runs.To put that in perspective, only three teams (the Yankees, Braves, and Reds) have given up fewer.”
Mark Vientos has been given more than a few chances, depending on which way you look at Ying/Yang. In 2025, I felt that POBO David Stearns and manager Carlos Mendoza set a place for anyone to earn playing time by earning playing time.
You hit; you play. You don’t; you sit. There was a lot of movement because no one staked a claim and forced their way into the lineup. Brett Baty became the defacto third baseman because he is a much better defensive asset than Vientos. Playing time led to a comfort level that is visible since Baty has seemingly inherited Jeff McNiel’s utility role.
That means Mendoza will move him around as needed to get him in the lineup. It also means he can sit, like Sunday, for Mark Vientos to play. Hitting .476 with a 1.236 OPS are loud enough numbers to ensure a spot.
And diving stops like this…
Will ensure Mendy keeps puts him in the lineup.
Thanks for reading the latest Mets Up. I’ll be back in five starts with hopefully something better to put down.
Take it easy down your life’s highway and have a great day!
